The students in Jennifer Johnson’s Science class at Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School experienced a close-up look at aquatic macroinvertebrates.
On the morning of Thursday, October 29, Stephen Greenwood, a Watershed Ambassador from the New Jersey AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassador Program, visited the class to teach students about aquatic macroinvertebrates, which are small animals without backbones that live at least part of their lives in streams, ponds and lakes.
“Students learned that these small organisms are an important part of the diet of the trout we are raising in our classroom. They also discovered that the types of macroinvertebrates found in local streams can indicate water quality and help determine whether the water supports healthy trout,” Ms. Johnson said
Ms. Johnson added.
“This lesson connects directly to our Trout in the Classroom project as we prepare to release our trout into a local stream this spring!”
