Alexis Houston and Remi Lalor are playing more than just the leading characters in the upcoming School Play at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School.
They are not acting when they assume the task of being role models.
“We feel that we must be role models to everyone,” Alexis and Remi, each an 8th Grade student at the Middle School, said at a recent afternoon rehearsal in the school’s auditorium.
“People are looking up to us, so we must be their role models,” Remi added.
While they both take their leadership roles seriously, they are acting—quite well— when they step on stage to rehearse for the School Play that is titled “Myth-Understood,” which will be performed and produced by the Middle School on Friday, November 13.
The curtain will rise at 6:30 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium.
Here is a short summary from the Pioneer Drama website on the play that is written by Jackie Martin,
Two teens writing a report on Greek mythology are startled when they get a visit from Hermes, winged helmet and all! The messenger whisks them away to Mount Olympus, where various gods and goddesses retell their myths to the students in a more favorable light.
In a quest to get people to worship them once again, Zeus and the other gods and goddesses want to put a more positive (and hilarious!) spin on their version of events.
While they are determined to “set an example to the whole cast in our roles,” both Alexis and Remi are practicing as the two leading characters—Alexis plays Bree and Remi portrays Jamie.
Alexis and Remi are just two students who make up a large and dedicated cast.
With the addition of 6th Grade at the Middle School this school year, the cast has attracted a total of 49 students, while the stage crew has brought in 13.
The addition of younger actors, along with the experienced students, has been well received during rehearsals, according to Olivia Matko, the Advisor of the Middle School’s Drama and Music Club. She is the Co-Director of the Play with Carla Fernandez.
“I am so proud of the progress the cast and crew are making. Adding 6th Grade this year has really improved the Drama Club. The 6th Graders come in with so much energy and positivity and it is infectious,” Ms. Matko revealed.
The theme of the school play has also drawn attention and strengthened work ethic during rehearsals.
“So many of our cast members have personal interests in Greek Mythology so it is super fun to let them be the experts and teach each other about their characters,” Ms. Matko said. “They have all grown so much since the first day of rehearsals and I know they will continue to work hard until our final performance.”.
