Big Nick

The staff at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School put an end to the recent domination of the students when the highly popular Big Nick classic was played on Thursday, February 20.

The Middle School gymnasium was the scene when the school’s Faculty Team pulled out a 46-45 basketball victory over the Student Team in the 24th Big Nick Classic that once again drew an energetic crowd.

That result ended a three-year victory run by the Student Team.

The basketball game is spearheaded by Meghan Wilkinson and Kim Pratt, the dedicated Co-Advisors of the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School Student Council.

The Big Nick Classic, which is sponsored by the Student Council, is played in honor of the late Nick Klecz who served as a teacher and coach in the district for nearly 40 years. The game was also dedicated in memory of Dan Grigal who was a beloved Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School Physical Education Teacher and Basketball Coach.

The Faculty Team took off and built a big lead but the students rallied to deliver a tight closing to the game. Mike Geremia, who is a Mathematics Teacher at the Middle School, put together the winning staff squad while the students were coached by Megan Corliss, the Middle School Principal.

Proceeds from the event will go to providing scholarships and upgrades to the Middle School.

Ms. Wilkinson and Ms. Pratt pointed out that the winning team was actually everyone who contributed to this lively event.

“We are always so grateful to the faculty who dedicate the time and effort to participate in this special event. Whether it be a star player or working behind the scenes, without their heart, this event would not be possible,” Ms. Wilkinson and Ms. Pratt said.

They continued to share their feelings about this special evening.

“We also love the energy the student team brings each year. They shine regardless of whether they win or lose. It is one of the most memorable nights here at the middle school with so many students, families, and friends joining in the fun. It's a high point in the school year that everyone looks forward to.”
