A walk, a stroll, and yes, even a trot, produced a holiday cheer at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School.
On the morning of Wednesday, November 27, the eve of Thanksgiving, the students and staff at the Middle School gave thanks while they raised funds for a heart-warming cause when the 12th Turkey Trot was staged in the school’s gymnasium.
Leading up to the event, students were asked to donate at least $1, which in return, each student would receive a raffle ticket. The lucky winners of the raffle would receive gift cards to numerous local businesses in the area.
The funds raised would be then used to assist Middle School families in need during this holiday season.
The students embarked on their trot during their regular physical education classes that morning. There were a total of eight walking sessions that the students produced when they walked around the gym for 25 minutes.
This heart-warming event was launched by Suanne Geoghan and the Middle School Counseling department 12 years ago Ms. Geoghan coordinated her final Turkey Trot last November before she shifted to her new role as a Guidance Counselor up the road at Bridgewater-Raritan High School.
But her mission continued with the present Middle School Counseling department, led by Christina Roach. Ms. Roach was joined in the Middle School gym during the Turkey Trot by her colleagues from the Counseling department—Alyssa Carothers, Lori Macsata, Julie Mesiterich, Kaelyn Passeri and Scott Ruth.
“We kept this going as a group and it is such a wonderful way to kick off the holidays,” Ms. Roach said. “ And the kids love to donate.”
Those donations rung up a final total of $1,211 that will be put to good use during the holiday season.
“ I always look forward to seeing all of our generous students and staff trotting and raising money for families in our community in need,” Middle School Principal Megan Corliss said.
