Four students at Bridgewater-Raritan High School teamed up to win a state championship in economics.

Now, these four underclassmen have competed in the national semifinals in pursuit of qualifying for the National Economics Challenge, which will be held for eight schools from May 27 through 29 in Atlanta, Georgia.

According to its website, the National Economics Challenge (NEC) is the country’s only economics competition of its kind for high school students. It tests micro and macroeconomic principles as well as knowledge of the world economy.

Junior Jiankai Pan, and sophomores Neil Parikh, Kartik Khurana and Rahul Kopparapu advanced to the national semifinals when Bridgewater-Raritan High School captured the New Jersey Economics Challenge championship on Friday, March 27.

They represented New Jersey and participated alongside champions from all 50 states in the National Economics Challenge semifinals on Thursday, April 23.

The four students, under the guidance of Abbe Rubin, their devoted Advisor of Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s Economics Challenge Club, sat at tables with their laptops to participate in the semifinals in the high school’s Library Classroom C during the Unit Lunch period.

There, they competed in 45 tests that consumed 45 minutes in their bid to finish among the top eight schools in the country and gain a ticket to Atlanta.

They will learn of their status when the results are announced on May 1.

“It has taken a lot of effort to get where we are,” Kartik said. “But it was worth the work to win the state championship.”

The four students and Ms. Rubin all agreed when they declared.

“No matter what happens today (April 23), we are state champions.”
