Maddie Mattis was drawn to the play because of her passion for the book.
Amalia Marquardt was not familiar with the book, but she is performing due to her passion for acting.
These Bridgwater-Raritan High School students created different paths to the stage, but both are pivotal characters as they join forces with their fellow cast and crew members when the high school’s Theatre Arts department presents the Fall Play, The Outsiders.
The show will be performed in Bridgewater-Raritan High School’s newly renovated auditorium on Thursday, December 4, Friday, December 5, and Saturday, December 6. The curtain for each show will go up at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens and are available at the door on the night of the performance or through GoFan .https://gofan.co/app/school/NJ20083_1
Bridgewater-Raritan staff members receive one complimentary ticket.
The Outsiders is a classic novel by S.E. Hinton that details the conflict between two rival groups, divided by their socioeconomic status, and set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1965.
The book, which later became a hit movie, is told in first-person perspective by teenage protagonist Ponyboy Curtis.
Our Ponyboy for this show at Bridgewater-Raritan High School is Maddie Mathis, who is just a freshman but has already shown signs of becoming a staple on stage for years to come.
But she had no intentions of acting in the high school’s Fall Play until she learned the title of the show.
“I changed my mind about doing the play once I heard in September that it was The Outsiders,” Maddie revealed. “I read the book in 8th Grade and I thought it was really good.”
Amalia is a senior who has risen on stage during her scholastic career. An accomplished artist, she honestly admitted that she “never really knew about The Outsiders.”
“I just wanted to be in the play,” declared Amalia, who portrays the role of Cherry.
After months of rehearsal under the expert guidance of Heather Diaforli-Day, the Director of the Theatre Arts department, Maddie, Amalia, and their fellow actors and crew members are not only prepared but are also having a fun time.
“I like the cast, I like the rehearsals, and I really look forward to coming to the auditorium after school to practice,” Maddie said.
Amalia said that “she enjoys playing the role of Cherry.”
“This is a beautiful story that young kids can really relate to,” she concluded.
