Middle school students walk to raise funds during Turkey Trot

Providing assistance to families during the holiday season served as the energy for students who walked in the 10th Turkey Trot at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School.

On the eve of Thanksgiving, Wednesday, November 23, the seventh and eighth grade students at the Middle School took their strolls during their gym class around the school’s gymnasium.

According to the originator of the event, Suzanne Geoghan, a Guidance Counselor at the Middle School, each student was asked to donate at least $1, which in return, each student received raffle tickets.

Winners of the raffles received gift cards to numerous business establishments in the area, including Dunkin Donuts, Chipotle, Panera Bread, Starbucks and the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School store.

Ms. Geoghan explained why a Turkey Trot.

“It was my idea 10 years ago because I wanted to help families in need during the holidays so I had the students walk to raise the money,” Ms. Geoghan revealed.

She went on to explain that there were a total of eight walking sessions that lasted 25 minutes each.,

And she happily revealed that this year’s Turkey Trot resulted in a figure of $2,608 to be donated to families.

“We are truly overwhelmed by the students’ generosity,” Ms. Geoghan said.

Nick Costanzo, a Physical Education teacher at the Middle School, was impressed with the holiday tradition that features such a kind deed.

“This is a great community builder,’ Mr. Constanzo said while he stood on the gym floor while the students walked. “This is for a great cause and it shows our character.”

Middle School Principal Megan Corliss admired the determination of the students.

“We are thrilled with the student participation in this year’s Turkey Trot,” Principal Corliss said. “Due to the overwhelming support, we were able to assist many needy Bridgewater and Raritan families during the holidays.”
