Middle School boys' volleyball players have scored an ace this winter

There is a spike of volleyball fever at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School.

The sport was christened at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School in the fall when the girls played in the school’s first-ever volleyball season.

Volleyball for boys and girls had been approved to be added to the middle school over the summer of 2023 by the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District Board of Education.

The inaugural girls’ volleyball program for the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School just completed its maiden season when 30 students participated and teamed up to finish with a 2-4 record under coaches Jodi Antunes and Kelly McManus. A total of 80 girls had tried out for a roster spot on that team.

The boys’ volleyball squad began practice in January, and under Middle School Coach Josh  Everett, the team will launch its season on Thursday, February 1, when Bridgewater-Raritan pays a visit to the Heritage Middle School in Livingston.

That matchup will be the first of five games to be played in a season that will close March 7.
That ending is just in time for Coach Everett to then assume his usual spring position as the assistant coach on the Bridgewater-Raritan High School boys’ volleyball team under head skipper Corey Romanak.

Bridgewater-Raritan’s boys’ volleyball team will begin practice on March 14.

“I offered to coach the Middle School because it would not present a conflict with the boys’ high school team,’’ said Coach Everett, who, during the fall, serves as the head coach for the Bridgewater-Raritan High School girls’ volleyball team.

His first order of business as the new coach for a new program was to determine his roster when 45 boys tried out for the team.
His roster lists 22 players whom he described  “have a great attitude, are really excited.’’

“This is little experience but that is fine, we are learning together and I am excited, too,” Coach Everett said.

His two elected team captains, Charlie Yang and Michael Ianniciello, both 8th Graders, are thrilled, too, and cherish the opportunity to compete on a team.

Neither has played on an organized volleyball team before this winter

“I am excited that they added more sports and this (volleyball) is great to have,’’ Yang said.

“Having this team gives more kids to be involved and the opportunity to play sports,’’ Ianniciello stated.
