As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, today we would like to recognize Rigoberta Menchú Tum. She is a K'iche' Guatemalan human rights activist, feminist, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Menchú has dedicated her life to publicizing the rights of Guatemala's Indigenous peoples during and after the Guatemalan Civil War, and to promoting Indigenous rights internationally. She stated: “Peace cannot exist without justice, justice cannot exist without fairness, fairness cannot exist without development, development cannot exist without democracy, democracy cannot exist without respect for the identity and worth of cultures and peoples.”

Happy Friday! Today is the last day of Week of Respect, and we are wearing red, white, and blue to stand united against bullying! Did you know that 15% of students ages 12-18 that have been bullied were cyberbullied? In order to fight against cyberbullying, today we challenge you to send a kind message - a text, email, or comment - to a friend and family member. Thank you for your support and participation during Week of Respect, and we hope to continue seeing these kind behaviors all year long!

Thank you to all the students who participated in Tuesday’s trivia activity! Out of all the age groups, bullying actually occurs the most frequently in middle school, which is why we must work together to prevent and stop bullying here at BRMS. When bullying occurs online - whether it’s on social media or by text messaging - it is called cyber bullying. Here is today’s trivia question: What percentage of students ages 12-18 that have been bullied, have been cyberbullied (online or by text message)? Make sure you check out your counselor’s Google Classroom page for the link to submit your answer by the end of time block 2 today. Remember, tomorrow we are going to stand united against bullying by wearing red, white, and blue!
